The History Channel really delivers in this awesome documentary on the history of The Unlit Ages, the period between the Descend of the Roman Empire and the rise of the Middle Ages. It is generally remembered as a bleak period when civilization in the West teetered on the verge of total collapse and barbarian warlords fought with each other when they weren’t busy fighting Viking hordes, Muslim invaders, or Byzantine armies.

The Shadowy Ages uses new scholarship and high production values to recreate the period impartial after the plunge of Rome in the slack 5th century A.D. The Roman Empire in the West had collapsed and a ragtag band of barbarians made up of Goths, Vandals, Franks, and Lombards wage bloody warfare against each other to divide up the pieces of the once-great Empire. In the East, the remnants of the Empire live on under the Emperor Justinian who becomes obsessed with recapturing Rome and reconquering the West. Meanwhile, the Franks, easily the most worthy of the post-Roman tribes, have begun to set aside a enormous kingdom under the Merovingian dynasty, led by King Clovis, whose conversion to Christianity helps score its state in the history of Europe. The documentary then touches on the Viking raids along the English and Irish coasts, the desperate struggle to crush the invading Muslim armies that threaten to choose all of Spain and France, and ultimately, the consolidation of Western Europe as piece of the Holy Roman Empire under Charlemagne.

This is probably one of the best History Channel DVDs out there and shows that a obedient amount of time and peril went into compose this production. While of course it cannot stutter every detail of the nearly 500 year period of the Shadowy Ages, it does a great job of providing an great introduction to the subject. It is one which recommends itself to anyone who claims to be a student of history.

I usually relish the re-enactment-type specials on the History Channel, but this one was a notch above anything they’ve ever done before. The production values were absolutely cinematic: the photography was fine, and the regain was so delicate that I hope they do out a soundtrack for this explain, or at least offer the music as an iTunes download. This explain never drags, and crams an fantastic amount of history into its 90 minutes of airtime. At the raze, it feels very record, like you’ve traveled on this mosey with someone. Definitely worth the recall, or at the very least, the rental.

I enjoyed this series of films very considerable. The “Goldmember” film a bit less but overall a very creative and humorous pop culture feast! One of the tremendous bonus’s for me anyway is to finally have the recent Austin Powers movie in the worthy 2:4 aspect ratio after years of having to view it on 1:85 on normal DVD. This may not mean distinguished to some viewers but to those eager in seeing what they did at the theater it does. The other two films came out in superb 2:4 aspect ratio on DVD previously so why the new was formatted a bit off was always a mystery to me. The films gaze gigantic on Blu-ray …and while they don’t have any Modern bonus features to my glance..at least they did import all the traditional ones and music videos (some blu-rays are coming out WITHOUT the previous bonus features) .

I picked the state up for a trace that came to about $15 per film so I mediate its a very capable value.

Austin Powers International Man of Mystery was the best of of the three, though the recount quality is marvelous it is not as elegant as I had hoped it would be (maybe I am unbiased really picky and scandalous since watching the Amazing HULK and The Dim Knight?

“The Glimpse who Shagged me” the colors are fantastic and the sharpest out of the 3 movies.

Goldmember was engaging but not as reliable as the first two.

If you are a die-hard Austin Powers fan, this is a no-brainer and a must assume! My wife whom has never seen any of these movies (OMG) concept they were histerical even today! Definitely Classic Mike Myers…

As previous reviewers have mentioned, “TRUCKS” is a remake of 1986’s “Maximum Overdrive” (which I also purchased on Amazon) . I liked “TRUCKS” better than “Maximum Overdrive” because it seemed as though there was more action in than its predecessor. I liked it even though the acting was deadpan- and the ending I liked mighty more than “Maximum Overdrive” (no spoilers) . If you are a astronomical fan of Titanic Rigs and Trucks in general (A Western Star tractor is the lead truck) you will like this movie; if you are a fan of sci-fi movies you might want to view. However, it’s not a terror movie (compared to movies like “The Exorcist”), so you fear movie buffs might be disappointed; if your looking for renowned actors/ any friendly acting for that matter this isn’t the movie for you. However, the main characters in this movie are the trucks themselves, so it’s not a total loss. It should preserve you fervent for 1 1/2…

I’ve read some of the reviews here, and this seems to be one of those polarizing films that people either like or despise. I bought it a couple of years ago, gaze unseen, and have to say that I opinion it was glowing gracious. Usually, movies that basically have one status can be resplendent insensible, but this one worked well, and while I do seize there being one minor character that was irritating (one of the “tourists” trapped in the diner/gas location along with everyone else), the main characters, the Dad and his kid(s), were likeable; and the gal who they aid out gives the anecdote a nice rob. I don’t know, I guess I’m easy to please, but it seems to me that if a movie can accumulate you to that point where you care about the characters, and they’ve keep them in a situation where you’re rooting for them to overcome their particular “troubles” – in this case an engaging mix of homicidal trucks – then it works.

I recommend this to folks who like Sci-Fi, who like terror films that are more than fair slasher flicks, and for anyone who wants to revisit some doughty and personable people from time to time…and fair have some fun!

Hard to bear that Miramax Entertainment could mess up this DVD so horribly. An anniversary release of one of the most famous films of the 20th century no less. Shame on them.

There are a lot of raves here about the fact that the film is being presented “letterboxed” for the first time. Actually, it’s unbiased the first time the top and bottom of the describe have been chopped off for no reason! “A Hard Day’s Night” was filmed in Academy standard 1.37:1. Slightly wider than your average TV tube, but not anything finish to the 1.66:1 sever job on the unusual DVD. Full-frame would have been the estimable presentation.

As for the audio…they DID shapely up the dialog portions of the movie, so for perhaps the first time EVER, you can actually HEAR what everyone is saying – and it no longer sounds like they are speaking into an Edison cylinder recorder.

Buy,Download, Or Stream A Hard Day’s Night! Click Here

But oh, the music. They replaced the novel mono soundtrack with the standard mono AHDN CD to replace the overmodulated music on the unusual film. Never mind that there were a couple of different mixes in there that they should have left alone (“Affirm Me Why”, “And I Fancy Her”, “If I Fell”) – BUT…they went and added microdelay and phasing to produce some kind of a half-assed 5.1 mix that through a standard stereo or mono downmixed output makes the audio sound phase-y and hollow. This is worse than the unique mono mix (available on the novel Beta & VHS release from 1982 or the print aired on AMC several years ago) and the fact that the standard mono mix was NOT made available as alternate audio on the disc (as it was on the “Yellow Submarine” DVD) is an oversight punishable by public stoning.

As for all the bonus material…not ONE interview with an genuine Beatle? Not even McCartney? The closest we bag is George Martin?

The person late this mess is none other than Martin Lewis, self-proclaimed Beatle “expert” and all around media whore. Lewis’ involvement explains why no-one at Apple would have anything to do with the project. With some two-hours of useless interviews as “bonus” material, here’s what you DON’T get:

The unusual theatrical trailers

The reissue theatrical trailers

The unusual theatrical “making-of” featurette

The surviving outtake footage (“You Can’t Do That”) [which, as a sidenote was left off the MPI DVD, making having the VHS & Laserdisc necessary]

The aforementioned MPI documentary DVD

Any surviving serene photos of the other missing sequences

Running commentary on an alternate audio track

The promised (but not included) Richard Lester’s “Running Jumping Standing Level-headed Movie”

Anything of any relevance.

What makes this all the worse is that the image looks terrific. However, it’s been so horribly trashed that the only qualified station for this DVD is the trash can or as a trade in at the ancient DVD store.

Anyone who owns the fresh MPI DVD should gain on to it and assign thier tewnty bucks.

Thanks to my friend Steve for enlightening me on this…

Being a tremendous Beatle fan, and a astronomical fan of this movie, I highly anticipated the arrival of this title on DVD. The sound on this DVD is unpleasant, there is absolutely no dynamic range. The volume level seems to flit at the same level through out the film, there is no incompatibility in volume between the scenes when there is a unruffled conversation and the scenes where the band is playing. I also have the title on laserdisc and let me thunder you, the laserdisc has at least 30 db of dynamic range. While watching this film on laserdisc, you can adjust the level of playback so that the scenes where there is conversation is a comfortable 75 db, and when the band plays it jumps up to an ear thumping 105 db or more. This DVD lacks ooph, the band sounds like their playing in a box. This film deserves a better sound treatment, I highly recommend boycotting the DVD and lets wait till they release it in it’s valid status.

The most memorable short scene, is that of a ridiculously proportioned girl, Darlene Grey, doing a topless boogie in the desert. Otherwise microscopic, she almost falls over on several occasions, because of the weight of her swinging breasts!

The dwelling : environmentally sensitive macho-man versus wrong oil tycoon looking to exploit the virgin wilderness of the nature loving Eskimos. It sounds like an A-Team episode. The dialouge is almost amusing – “you are the believe” the shaman says to Forest, the main character, “you have a destiny to fufill”. Uggh, cliche city. The action sequences are sub-par and are made all the more monotonous because Forest is essentially a super-man, and from begining to slay the supporting characters never destroy an opportunity to squawk us honest how tall he is. The movie is capped off with a sappy, anti-corporate speech (complete with canned images of smog-filled cities and oil-soaked seals) . I watched this entire movie because I’m overseas and english-language entertainment is hard to arrive by. Otherwise I would have stopped watching it within 20 minutes, easy.

Save yourself a rental fee and pass up this movie. The martial arts are awful to non-existent, and the required bar fight scene is truly hilarious, especially when an overweight and out-of-shape Seagal leaps onto a table to fight one of the poor guys. It is a lawful miracle of original carpentry that the limited table doesn’t collapse from Mr. Seagal’s ponderous bodyweight. The “politics” slack this movie are simplistic, and hopelessly outdated, with oil company tycoons as the villains and the barely literate Seagal delivering a speech at the slay of the movie that, once again, is unintentionally hilarious in its absurdity.

New Tricks is the best British cop show since the legendry ‘Sweeney’. Like that great show what New Tricks has, but most British Cop shows lack is humour. This is not to say that is it is either a comedy or a ‘light’ detective series in the manner of say Pie in the Sky. The crimes in New Tricks are real, violent often messy.

The concept is not new, three retired detectives are called back to look at unsolved cases. The premise being that as old coppers they will be aware of the police procedures at the time when the crimes were carried out. The first Jack Halford (James Bolam)was the most senior and the most level headed even though he spends most evenings talking to his dead wife who is buried in his back garden. Jack has a violent and brutal side which from time to time slips out. He does however appear to have the respect of everyone who knew him as a serving police officer.

Buy,Download, Or Stream New Tricks: Season One! Click Here

The second is Gerry Standing ( Dennis Waterman). We get the impression that Jerry was not above taking the odd bribe from criminals but as he tells his boss ‘Sandra I’m a bad boy not a bastard’. He has a number of ex wives and host of children all of whom are girls. Collectively he calls them ‘The Covern.’ Of the three he is the one who refuses to grow old. An early scene has the three compairing medication. The other two have pills for blood pressure, heart, depression etc. Gerry has viagra. He also struggles with the modern no smoking rules.

The third, Brian Lane (Alun Armstrong). Brain suffers from mental health problems and is a recovering alcoholic. He also has an encyclopedic knowledge of criminal cases and various police officers hence his knickname og ‘Memory Lane’. Alone of the three he has a wife (Susan Jameson) who struggles to cope with his bizzare behavour.

The three are managed by Sandra Pullman (Amanda Redmond)who is the only serving police officer in the team. She is torn between defending her team from those higher up and frustration at the old school antics of the three, such as secretly taping suspects, this is defended by Gerry who points out he is no longer a copper and only the police are bared from secretly tapping suspects.

Each of the five is perfectly played. Class drama, well written undemanding but does not treat you as an idiot.

UCOS – The Unsolved Crime and Open Case Squad is a rag tag, elder bunch of ex-cops who are assembled by the recently demoted DS Pullman, played by Amanda Redman. She had a bust go bad where she accidentally shot a dog, and suddenly she finds herself leading this team of cops whose best years are far behind them. All of her 3 re-hires left the police for various reasons and each has their own share of personal and emotional issues they are dealing with. For Pullman, she is constantly trying to balance her career and finding the time to continually hit the dating scene in her 40’s. Handling the stubborn and erratic personalities of her new team is another challenge.

Jack Halford (played by James Bolam) is the only member who left the police force on amicable terms, having retired as a D.C. Superintendent. He is forever haunted by the hit and run accident that claimed his wife. He seems to be the oldest, but also the clearest thinker of the squad.

Brian Lane (played by Alun Armstrong) is an ex Detective Inspector who was sacked for having someone die while in his custody, which he strongly felt was not his fault. He’s sort of a pill popping, memory machine with OCD who memorized everyone’s resume who has ever worked at Scotland Yard. Also, if you ask him what he was doing on July 19th, 1978, he’ll remember.

My favorite of the bunch, and what drew me to find this show in the first place is the star of numerous popular UK shows over the years, including the highly popular Sweeney and Minder series, Dennis Waterman. It seems he always plays a ladies’ man in every series, and this one is no exception. You will usually find him hitting on his boss, being pursued by ex-flames, or eyeing the multitude of women he encounters during his cases.

Waterman’s character Gerry Standing, although no longer performing his legendary fisticuffs as he did in Minder and Sweeney, still manages to pull some punches with his sharp tongue and wit. He was fired for breaking his superior’s jaw, a Commisioner Bevan, who just so happens to be UCOS’s supervisor, so you can imagine the interaction just waiting to happen there. A classic Waterman highlight is when the crew is reviewing film of a late 60’s protest for a case and he jumps up, all serious-like and says, “ey, wait”. Then pauses the video only to point at a girl in the crowd and say, “I had her”.

After a rather long 90 minute pilot, once you get into normal episodes, they are strong from start to finish. Unlike US TV shows, where going back and viewing the first 5 or 6 shows can sometimes look awkward; and actors don’t really find their niche in their character, sometimes up until the 2nd season; this superb gang of British vets really nail their characters right out of the gate. I felt the pilot was merely a preview of what was to come, and it certainly doesn’t play like the rest of the episodes do in the series (they are much better). I was almost ready to write the series off after the pilot, but I’m glad I didn’t.

One other fine character is PC Clark, played by Chike Okonkwo. In this first series, he is the low on the totem pole, young police constable, who really offsets all the older characters. He was always eager to help out and offer his young viewpoint and detective skills to the team. I feel this will be a slight negative not seeing him reappear in later shows, as his character does not return for series 2. A minor setback to an otherwise strong and entertaining British show.

While following that TV crime solving mold, it still manages to have that certain appeal that US shows simply do not have. It’s also great to see one of my favorite actors, Dennis Waterman, still holding his own after 4 decades. He also sings the show’s theme song (a staple for shows he’s starred in over the years) and a cover of the Traveling Wilbury’s End Of The Line in one of the episodes.

It’s surprising to see this as a US DVD release, because as far as I know, this only appeared on some PBS channels in certain parts of the country, and I haven’t seen it on any cable channels (maybe BBC America at one time?). I think it’s high ratings in it’s later seasons in the UK have warranted a US “trial”. I say trial as in they release a first season, and only subsequent sets come out if sales are good. However, even The Sweeney hasn’t had a series 2 release in the US yet, so I presume there’s a slim chance of all 5 later series of New Tricks getting released here, but you never know. I’ll just have to continue ordering the Region 2 series sets. Series 6 aired in July in the UK with a DVD release scheduled for Sept. ‘09.

DESPERATE TRAIL– After years of physical abuse, the daughter-in-law (Fiorentino) of Marshal Bill Speakes (Elliott) kills her husband. She’s sentenced to hang but manages to elope with the wait on of Jack Cooper (Sheffer) . Marshal Speakes will do almost anything to bring her to justice and avenge his son’s death.

ROUGH RIDERS– Made-for-TV biopic about Teddy Roosevelt (Berenger) and the volunteer cavalrymen who in the Spanish-American War of 1898 charged up the heavily-defended San Juan Hill alongside him. Excellent cast includes co-star Elliott as Capt. Bucky O’Neil.

YOU KNOW MY NAME– TV movie about loyal life cowboy and pioneering film director Bill Tilghman (Elliott) . An ex-buffalo hunter and deputy of Wyatt Earp, Tilghman is intent on producing realistic westerns, but faces opposition when he favors unknowns for his pictures rather than established stars like Tom Mix. Tilghman also has to deal with a used lawman rival named Wiley (Howard), who makes constant exertion for him.

Also recommended:

In the 4-hour myth GETTYSBURG (1993), Elliott portrays Gen. John Buford. On July 1st, 1863, the intrepid efforts of Buford’s two brigades of dismounted cavalrymen slowed Gen. Rob’t E. Lee’s reach on the town of Gettysburg, and made possible the victory that came two days later.

Parenthetical numbers preceding titles are 1 to 10 viewer poll ratings found at a film resource website.

(6.0) The Desperate Sprint (1995) – Sam Elliott/Craig Sheffer/Linda Fiorentino/Frank Whaley/John Furlong/Robin Westphal

(7.2) Rough Riders (TV-1997) – Tom Berenger/Sam Elliott/Gary Busey/Brad Johnson/Illeana Douglas/Chris Noth/Brian Keith/George Hamilton/R. Lee Ermey/William Katt

(6.1) You Know My Name (TV-1999) – Sam Elliott/Arliss Howard/Carolyn McCormack/James Gammon/R. Lee Ermey/James Parks

As a sizable Sam Elliott fan, I have been waiting for a compilation of his work. This mini trouble of Westerns is surely a expansive commence.

With his rugged respectable looks ( No one wears a mustache like Sam), his rush ( without being arrogant) and “that” scream….no matter what role he portrays, he’s going to shine. I liked him very mighty in the new “Mercurial & the Humdrum”, and as General Sam Houston. My personal favourite role, of course not a western, as Gar, in Cover with Cher. They had colossal chemistry on screen; so, of course, does his wife Katharine Ross ( but being female, I’d rather not peep him with his wife) .

I’d take the compilation, if I didn’t already have them singular.

This review refers to the Warner Bros DVD release of “Rebel Without a Cause”……

After nearly 50 years from it’s release in 1955, this is a film that tranquil truley embodies the feelings of teenage angst. The three teens that this fable revolves around are played powerfully by James Dean, Natalie Wood and Sal Mineo. It’s not impartial about how the kids deal with the problems that life hands them but about the parents as well.

Jim Stark(Dean) is the newcomer to the neighborhood. The family is always lively around seemingly due to Jim’s inability to stop out of peril. The parents(Jim Backus/Ann Doran) may be at the core of Jim’s problems. There’s a tall scene at the police state, where the parents are arguing(as usual) over what’s accurate for the boy and Jim sums up the whole event by crying out, as only James Dean could do..”You’re tearing me apart”.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Rebel Without a Cause! Click Here

Judy(Wood),very frosty and share of ‘The in-crowd” comes from what seems to be a typical middle-class family, but underneath there are problems galore. At 16, Judy longs for the affection her father(William Hopper) gave her as a tiny girl, but he seems to be confused by her impending womanhood and pushes her away both emotionally and phyically. Judy does whatever she can to score her father’s attention.

Perhaps the most deeply shocked of all is John “Plato” Crawford(Mineo) who comes from a well off family but they are never around to care for him or about him. He is cared for by his well meaning housekeeper/nurse played brillantly by Marietta Canty.

Trouble once again finds Jim on his very first day of school, which erupts in a knife fight that is so beautifully acted and directed it takes on the search for of an exquiste dance, and ends with a tragic car urge. The parents seem to be of no befriend in the dilemna. Jim, Judy and Plato secure each other in their loneliness and fabricate a makeshift family of their believe, that also is beset with some devastating results.

Beautifully directed by Nicholas Ray(Johnny Gutiar/The Flying Leathernecks), watching this film again was like finding a buried care for in a time capsule. It is a legend, that will always have meaning as although the times(and types of problems) may change, people really don’t.These young brillant actors had an on shroud chemistry and charisma that is unsurpassed. I also want to obtain mention of Edward Platt, who played the empathetic Juvenile Officer, Corey Allen as “Buzz”(Dean’s rival), and also peruse for Dennis Hopper in an early role as one of “The kids”.

Warner Brothers has done a good transfer of this 48 year broken-down film. It has been restored, looks designate fresh, and is presented in the modern widescreen. The sound was also terrific in the remastered Dolby Digital 5.1. There are some well-behaved special features to notice. Slack the scene documentaries which were actually filmed around the time of the making of “Rebel” enables us to behold interviews with the stars. There is one with James Dean not only talking about the film, but advising young people to “Drive Safely”! You will also notice the mask tests and learn where that toy monkey came from in the opening scene.

If it’s a film you already know you savor, you will savor the DVD. If you haven’t seen it, whether you are a teen or an adult, you will be moved by this chronicle and it’s a must have for your classic DVD collection.

Thanks and devour…..Laurie

Released soon after James Dean’s death, in the same year in which East of Eden also appeared, this film immediately attracted and rewarded ample interest and has continued to do so. Section of its appeal is explained by the fact that Dean died instantaneously in a violent car shatter, Natalie Wood drowned, Sal Mineo was stabbed to death, and Slit Adams overdosed on prescription drugs. Their premature deaths enrich even more the poignancy of their roles as teenage rebels “without a cause.” Actually, distinguished of their behavior is explained by their unhappiness in their dysfunctional families. Jim Stark (Dean) feels smothered by his parents who fade from one town to another, hoping that he will finally “obtain himself.” Judy (Wood) desperately needs savor from a father (William Hopper) who is unwilling and/or unable to provide it. Plato (Mineo) seems to have no contact whatsoever with his parents. Meanwhile, Judy eagerly agrees to be gang leader Buzz Gunderson’s “trophy girlfriend.” After his death, she shifts her attention to Jim. They and Plato briefly become a “family of three,” in one scene in an abandoned mansion even pretending (albeit satirically) to be father, mother, and son. (FYI, the dwelling in which this scene was shot is alleged to have appeared earlier in Sunset Boulevard as Norma Desmond’s mansion.) All of the film’s action occurs within a 24-hour time period, beginning in a police location and ending with police also fervent because….

Nicholas Ray directed Rebel Without a Cause and also co-authored the script. Working with an exceptionally talented cast, he succeeded so well with evoking tremendous performances from that cast that Dean, Wood, and Mineo have since become icons for teenage malaise. They brood, they pout, they withdraw, they content, they whimper, while feeling totally misunderstood by adults. They especially resent their parents’ inability to “come by it” even without colorful what that “it” is.

I saw this film again recently, again impressed by the quality of the acting but, probably inevitably, considerable of the film now seems dated to me even as it retains mighty of its innocence. Some scenes remain quite shimmering, such as when Judy stands proudly out in the field, bathed in automobile headlights, before “officially” starting the “Chickie Bustle” contest; also when Jim urges his Mitty-like father (Jim Backus) to stand up to his (Mr. Stark’s) badger-like wife (Rochelle Hudson) . It is probably not realistic to quiz young people in relatively comfortable circumstances to have a “cause” except to be approved, respected, and loved on their possess terms. This is a “classic” of sorts. When seeing it now, I have the feeling that I have opened a time capsule from 1955 and the film is among the items contained in it.
